Description
The Works of Charles Dickens, Household Edition, 1877.
Pictures from Italy, Sketches and American Notes.
Published in New York by Harper & Brothers, 1877. This book is illustrated by two of the most notable American illustrators of their day, Thomas Nast (1840-1902) and Arthur B Frost (1851-1928).
It is interesting to note that Thomas Nast created our modern image of Santa Claus. He developed his illustrations of Santa Clause over a number of years until it became the figure we know today.
Arthur B Frost was an artist, illustrator, graphic artist and comics writer. He is considered one of the great illustrators in the Golden Age of American Illustration.
These accounts by Charles Dickens (1812-1870) of his trip to Italy, his Sketches by Boz and his trip to America are fascinating.
This American book is over one hundred and forty years old. It is a hardback with a dark green binding with gold foil. The spine is slightly battered and has broken away a little. The inside pages are clean and very readable. They have yellowed slightly and have occasional small tears. The book is in fairly good condition and full of wonderful illustrations.
