Eric Ravilious, Wedgwood plate, Garden Series, Feeding the Birds
Eric Ravilious (1903-1942) produced his designs first as sketches in pencil and wash. The sketches were then transferred by the craftsmen and women at Wedgwood onto a wonderful range of plates, jugs, bowls, teapots, mugs and more. This process and the work Ravilious produced for Wedgwood is explained in detail in the excellent book ‘Ravilious & Wedgwood‘.
This Garden Series plate has a beautiful image of a woman sitting beneath a tree feeding the birds. The under-glaze is printed in black and enamelled in yellow. The back is stamped with the Wedgwood marks.
