Frank Martin, Etching, Hollywood Beauties
This print is a wonderful set of etchings assembled as one print by the artist Frank Martin.
As an artist and illustrator Frank Martin (1921-2005) was a master print-maker and this print is an excellent demonstration his range of etching techniques, including aquatint and soft-ground techniques.
His favourite subject was cinema, especially silent films and the Hollywood musicals of the 1920s and 30s. This print of Hollywood beauties is entitled ‘Carole Lombard, Lili Damita and others’.
Frank Martin studied at Saint Martin’s School of Art, London. He studied etching with Clifford Webb (1895–1972) and John Buckland-Wright (1897-1954) and also wood engraving with Gertrude Hermes (1901–1983). His prints are now much sought after by collectors.
He exhibited widely throughout the world, including a one-man show at the National Film Theatre in London in the 1970s.
