Ian Fleming, Casino Royale, 1953
This copy of Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale is a 1953 James Bond first edition – but its origin is a mystery. This appears to be a book club edition but it is different to other American book club first editions that we have seen.
The first UK edition of Casino Royale was published in 1953. It was then published in America in 1953-1954.
Our copy was also published in 1953 in America. It is a hardback in excellent condition. It has black boards with a blue strip on the cover and gold lettering on the spine. The book is in almost unread condition. There is very slight bumping on the corners. It is printed on deckled-edge paper. This copy was published nearly seventy years ago, and was part of the launch of the publishing sensation – James Bond.
According to Wikipedia sales of Casino Royale, Ian Fleming‘s first 007 book, were poor in America. However, sales grew and the iconic character James Bond, 007 became know worldwide. Ian Fleming wrote a further eleven James Bond novels plus two sets of short stories. The books became a publishing and movie phenomena.
The dust jackets for the first editions are interesting. We have seen different dust jackets for the USA book club edition. One of the first American book club covers are shown below.
With this book we are including a facsimile dust jacket from one of the first American editions.
Our copy is a very nice book. Reading the first story of Mr Bond in an original edition is a pleasure.
