Lord Alfred Douglas, autobiography, signed
This is the third edition of this book ‘New Edition’ October 1931. It is signed by Lord Alfred Douglas with a dedication to ‘Madge Dalla Volta‘ (Interestingly, translated from Italian ‘Dalla Volta‘ means ‘from time‘.). This book also has a Preface to this edition in which Lord Alfred Douglas mentions Mr Frank Harris, Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde, and their discussions and advice! Considering the trial and imprisonment of Oscar Wilde for ‘gross indecency’ this preface makes fascinating reading.
Lord Alfred Douglas, nicknamed Bosie, was an English author, poet and translator, better known as the friend and lover of writer Oscar Wilde. Oscar Wilde met Lord Alfred Douglas in 1891. A friendship quickly grew between Wilde and Douglas and by 1893 Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas had an ongoing tempestuous affair. Wilde may have been relatively indiscreet, in the way he acted but Lord Alfred was reckless in public. This famous love affair and trial make this signed autobiography a rare collector’s item.
