McElligot’s Pool by Dr Seuss

McElligot’s Pool by Dr Seuss is a rare, lovely 1947 first edition of one of his classic children’s books.

This classic children’s book has a wonderful rhyme telling the story – and is illustrated throughout with beautifuk colour spreads alternating with black and white pages. The book is a delight to read and the Dr Seuss illustrations are rich and magical.

Interestingly, in 2021 the Seuss estate decided to cease further publication of this book on the grounds that it was thought to be racist. However, we find it hard to see anything in the book that could be considered objectionable.

This is a first edition, printed in 1947. There were several printings of the first edition. The earliest printings have an open mouth fish on the front boards, later printings have a closed mouth fish on the front boards. This copy of McElligot’s Pool has the closed mouth fish. Listed on the back of the dust jacket are How the Grinch Stole Christmas and The Cat in the Hat Comes Back.

Published by Random House, New York, 1947 (This book should have been published in 1941 but Dr Seuss got sidetracked by the war). Tall quarto. Hard-cover, first edition. Luckily the dust jacket has survived, although it is a little torn and scuffed but the colours throughout are bright and make this seventy year old book so nice. The inside pages are clean and bright.
