Tess of the d’Urbervilles, is one of Hardy’s major novels, originally published in 1891.

Agnes Miller Parker (1895–1980) was one of the great wood engravers of the twentieth century. Her work in this illustrated book is wonderful. The illustrations are a mix of colour double-page spreads and black line wood engravings.

The book is housed in a slipcase that has some scuffing on the corners. It is in very good condition. The inside pages and illustrations are bright and clear.

There is an introduction by Robert Cantwell and several interesting prefaces by Thomas Hardy that date from the first publication in 1891 until 1912. These prefaces show how Hardy felt about the way the book was recieved over those years.
