The Hunting of the Snark by Lewis Carroll
This lovely book is beautifully illustrated by Mervyn Peake and is one of those books that should be reprinted.
Mervyn Peake’s illustrations are a delight. They match the comic nature of Lewis Carroll’s wonderful nonsense poem perfectly.
The Hunting of the Snark. An Agony in Eight Fits. was written by Lewis Carroll (1832-1898) between 1874 and 1876. This famous poem borrows the setting from Lewis Carroll’s earlier poem Jabberwocky in his children’s novel Through the Looking Glass.
Published by Lighthouse Books as one of their Zodiac Books in Great Britain in 1948. The Hunting of the Snark is a delightful book for any collector of Lewis Carroll or Mervyn Peake.
Mervyn Peak (1937-1968) is the English writer, artist, poet, and illustrator, most known for his Gormenghast books.
This is a small book, 19.5cm x 12cm. Hardback with an illustrated cover on yellow boards, no dust-jacket. The cover is clean but slightly scuffed on the edges. The spine is slightly damaged. The inside pages are clean and bright with very slight foxing for a book that is nearly seventy years old.
