The Technique of the Color Wood-cut

Written by the artist and printmaker Walter J. Phillips (1884-1963) and published in America in 1926 The Technique of the Color Wood-cut is a book full of enthusiasm for the delicate art of producing woodcuts in color.

As always, artists such as Walter Phillips are inspired by the Japanese prints that brought this art to such a high level of perfection. In this book Walter Phillips explains in detail the nature of this form of printmaking. It covers the traditional Japanese method, preparation of the wood, cutting tools, printing, choosing the paper and much more.

Walter J. Phillips was a distinguished printmaker and painter. From the 1930s to the 1950s he played an important role in the development of the visual arts program for the Banff School of Fine Arts.

This is a first edition, hardback. The book is nicely printed with examples of color prints and also instructional illustrations.

The Technique of the Color Wood-cut is in good condition. The cover has a slight tear on the spine and a few small marks. The inside pages are clean and bright.
