‘Belt Up’, Thelwell’s Motoring Manual.
The British cartoonist Norman Thelwell (1923-2004 ) is well known for his cartoons about young girls and their ponies. With Thelwell’s Motoring Manual he shows the funny side of motoring in the UK in the 1970s.
‘Belt Up’, Thelwell’s Motoring Manual is packed with his unique view of the motorist. As a cartoonist Thelwell was a superb illustrator and really captures the joys and fun of motoring in that era.
The dust jacket has a nice colour illustration by Thelwell. This book is price-clipped. The dust jacket is in good condition with a slight tear at the top of the front page. A first edition hardback published by Eyre Methuen Ltd, London 1974. The inside pages are clean and bright.
As with a lot of cartoonists, the social history of their time becomes apparent. These cartoons of 1960s and 70s motoring capture the evolution of the motor car in post-war Britain.
