The Tree in the Courtyard

The Tree that stood outside Anne Frank’s window

The Tree in the Courtyard – Looking Through Anne Frank’s Window. Written by Jeff Gottesfeld. Illustrated by Peter McCarty.

One of the New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Books of 2016. The tree that stood in the courtyard outside Anne Frank’s window is part of the history of the Frank family and their long time in hiding, and Anne’s capture by the Nazis during World War II. This book uses Peter McCarty’s illustrations to juxtapose the tree’s growth with the somber realities and flashes of joy in Anne’s constrained young life. The illustrations are intense and the story is heartbreaking.
