Description

Guy de Maupassant, A Woman’s Life.

A nicely illustrated book. Published by The Nonesuch Press, London, 1942.

A Woman’s Life, or Une Vie, was written in 1893 and is considered to be one of Guy de Maupassant’s greatest novels.

This book is designed by Francis Meynell and illustrated throughout by the French artist Edy Legrand (1892-1970). The book is printed in Letterpress, but interestingly, the illustrations  have been over-printed in colour using rubber plates cut by Herbert Rau.

Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) was a French short story writer and novelist. He wrote 300 short stories and six novels, plus travel books and more. He is considered the father of the short story.

The Nonesuch Press was a private press founded in London in 1922. It continued to produce fine books until the mid 1960s.

It is rare to find books illustrated by Edy Legrand. This is a hardback book, nicely typeset and designed. It is in good condition. The cover has some darkening on it. The inside pages are clean and bright. There is a tear on the last page of the book where text explains the design and production. There is an inscription on the flyleaf, and a nice ex-libris label on the inside cover.
